More than 2,000,000 international visitors from more than 184 countries participate in the prelude to the Our Ocean Conference
The nineteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), also known as CITES COP19, began on November 14 in Panama.
This world-class event, which has the support of PROMTUR Panama, brings together more than two thousand delegates from 184 countries, international agencies and various organizations. The meeting is expected to generate an economic impact for the country of more than 17 million balboas.
During the COP, which takes place from November 14 to 25, 2022 at the Panama Convention Center, future policies will be defined that seek to protect the biodiversity of some 600 animal and plant species on a planetary scale and achieve a balance.
At the meeting, 52 proposals will be examined to decide on the amendment of the CITES Appendices, of which some 30 will be exposed by Central and South America and the Caribbean, and of which Panama has promoted 9, being the inclusion of 19 species of sharks in Appendix II of the Cites the most representative.
CITES regulates the international trade of more than 38,000 species of plants and animals, including their products and derivatives, to ensure their survival in nature with benefits for the livelihoods of local people and the global environment.
